Frequently Asked Questions
What is a VoIP connection and how does it work?
VoIP, or ‘voice over IP’ turns voice into a digital signal which can then be transmitted over the internet – straight from a desktop computer, mobile app, or digital handset. It’s much cheaper than traditional phone lines, much more flexible, and offers many feature-rich services usually reserved for PBXs used by large businesses.
Is VoIP the same as a landline?
Essentially, both can be used to make and receive phone calls, however, a VoIP phone service brings many advantages over a traditional PSTN ‘fixed’ landline. The most significant difference is that VoIP calls can be made from anywhere that has an internet connection. This means you can take your VoIP handset (or laptop/mobile app) to any part of the world and make/receive calls at no extra cost, making staying connected accessible.
What are the benefits of VoIP?
VoIP is efficient, scalable, flexible and multi-functional too. Adding call features that used to only be available with high-end PABX solutions. Now there’s no longer a requirement for expensive equipment with physical limitations.
Can I use my regular phone with VoIP?
Unfortunately not, the old traditional analog telephone handsets will not connect or function on a VoIP system or line. A new IP Telephone Instrument will need to be purchased if not supplied.
Does VoIP slow down internet?
VoIP phone calls use less bandwidth than surfing the internet, so unless you’re running a really slow connection, VoIP won’t affect it.
How fast does my internet need to be for VoIP?
We recommend an allowance of 4Mbps dedicated bandwidth for stable high-quality VoIP calls, as other programs such as browsing, email and streaming on your network use bandwidth at the same time.
Can I keep my old phone number?
Yes, moving your existing phone numbers to VoIP is a simple process that we manage for you, ensuring it’s quick and easy with no downtime.
